With the school holidays starting in about a week, parents and students may be looking for ways to keep busy and entertained during their break from the school day. From ice skating and holiday concerts to escape room adventures, Downriver is buzzing with family-approved activities.
This list has something to make every day feel magical.
• Skating: Put on your skates! The 150,000-square-foot Kennedy Recreation Center in Trenton is home to three NHL-sized ice arenas, a pro shop, Celly’s Bar & Grill, skate rental and sharpening, and a full concession area. Families can enjoy open skating hours. Other skating options include Southgate Arena, Allen Park Civic Arena, Brownstown Sports Center, Taylor Sportsplex, Lincoln Park Skating Center and Skateland of Woodhaven.
• Downriver Community Band Christmas Concert: Join the Downriver Community Band for the annual Christmas Concert, a much-loved Southgate tradition. This year’s concert will be held on Sunday, December 22 at 3:00 PM at Christ The King Lutheran Church, 15600 Trenton Road.
• Fantasyland 2024 in Lincoln Park: This annual attraction runs through Christmas Eve. It offers a magical North Pole experience with Santa’s workshop, Christmas carols and holiday scents. It is open Wednesday to Sunday, with special opening hours on Christmas Eve.
• Movie time: New movies hit theaters during the holidays, and there’s a lot to discover. Or, if you want to watch a holiday classic, Cinema & Cocoa: The Polar Express airs at the Taylor Community Library on Saturday, December 21 from 11am to 1pm. The event includes a small craft and your child gets to collect a Golden Ticket.
• Flat Rock Model Train Depot and Museum: The museum is located at 28700 Arsenal Rd, on the Huron River. Train enthusiasts will find this small museum full of memories of the railway’s past and present. The museum is open on Saturday, December 21 and 28 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and will have 16 model trains running.
• Winter Holiday Nature Walks: Pack up and visit Oakwoods Metropark in Flat Rock. The 1,756-acre park features well-maintained trails that wind through mature forests. On Saturday, December 28 from 10am to 5pm or 2pm to 4pm, families can participate in Animals of Oakwoods and meet the animals in their backyard. This program is both indoors and outdoors. Pre-registration is required before 4:00 PM the day before the program.
• Fun Zones, Play Center, Gymnastics: Indoor play areas often have holiday specials. You can also try a new skill during open/drop-in gymnastics at local gyms.
• Go for a swim!: It may not be warm outside, but you can still enjoy an indoor swimming or water exercise class. The Downriver Family YMCA in Southgate has special holiday hours.
• Bowling: Bowling is a fun and active way to spend quality time with your children and create memories that will last a lifetime. It’s the perfect mix of friendly competition and laughter that the whole family can enjoy together. Check Woodhaven Lanes or Skore Lanes in Taylor.
• Escape Rooms for Kids: Family-friendly themes are available at places like Mystery Escapes in Lincoln Park and Escape the Post in Flat Rock.
